The Highwaymen were a group of 26 Black painters who rebuked the social injustice and conventional wisdom of the art community and went on to paint some of the most idyllic and romantic images of Florida’s landscapes.
The City of Sarasota is hosting a special capsule collection of Florida Highwaymen paintings on display in the City Hall atrium.
The City Hall Cultural Exhibit was created to celebrate the city’s many cultural legacies including the genres of visual arts, circus arts, architecture, ethnic groups, tourism, and historical documentation.
This is an honor, and an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate the artists and their important legacy while on display from January – June 2024. Next time you’re at City Hall, be sure to make time to view these treasured works of art.
