COUNTY COMMISSION APPROVES TDC/A GRANTS
Sarasota County Commissioners voted the morning of Tuesday, July 13, 2010 unanimously approving more than $1 million in Tourist Development Cultural/Arts (TDC/A) grants to Sarasota County arts and cultural organizations. Money for the TDC/A grants cycle is generated by Sarasota County’s half-cent tourist tax; and grants are distributed to organizations with specific events that enhance Sarasota County’s appeal as a cultural tourism destination.
TDC/A grants are administered by the Sarasota County Arts Council, and award recommendations are developed by an independent panel. The panel considers many factors when making its recommendations including artistic merit, administrative competence, and the cultural and geographical diversity of the project.
“I can assure you the awards were the result of a tremendous amount of work on the part of the organizations in submitting their applications and accompanying materials, and the hard working members of the grants panel,” says Ed Alley, chair of this year’s TDC/A grants panel. “Panelists worked endless hours reviewing applications, attending presentations, having public deliberation and interviews with the organizations involved, prior to making their scoring decisions.”
“The awards are even more important this year since the Florida Legislature only appropriated $950 thousand for the arts,” continued Alley. The TDC/A grants panel recommended awarding $1,063,162 to 25 organizations in Sarasota County.
