New York-born, Sarasota-based Susan James is a prolific singer/songwriter whose lyrics chronicle the vicissitudes of love and the absurdities of life. Whatever the subject matter, she aims for an uptempo and melodic musical experience, including influences from folk, blues, country, and a little bit of rock 'n roll. She also totes around a big book of favorite cover songs, including some from Dylan, Raitt, Ronstadt, Baez, Collins, Mitchell, Eagles, Browne, and many other notable tunesmiths from the 60s through the 80s.
Whenever possible, she invites her fellow "Hooligans", Bill LaPietra (guitar, vocals & percussion), Tom Hicks (bass & vocals), and George Leedham (fiddle, mandolin & lead guitar) to accompany and enrich her offerings. Susan James & The Hooligans met at the now-defunct Friday night jam at Books-a-Million (BAM) in Sarasota. Their first concert at BAM featured interruptions by espresso machines and overhead loudspeakers. Undaunted, they continued to practice and gig at local venues including Mother's Musical Bakery and Lake Osprey Cabaret.
Susan most recently appeared at the new Wednesday afternoon Farmers Market at Phillippi Estate in Sarasota.
