Art Center Sarasota is opening a new exhibition in the five galleries with the theme Outside Looking In. The opening reception is free and open to the public on Thursday, July 29 from 5-7 pm. The exhibition runs from July 29 through October 23, 2010. Outside Looking In explores how artists see the world and how the world sees them and their subjects. The all media juried exhibition is exclusively for members of the Art Center and highlights only their best work. In the galleries: Outside Looking In -Members Only, all media Juried Exhibition Members of Art Center Sarasota display their “best of the best” works of art. Jurors Jeanne Norman Chase and Douglas Teller choose 150 pieces for this member’s only exhibition. Gees Bend Quilts This nationally touring exhibition focuses on select quilts by the internationally acclaimed quilt makers of Gees Bend. These quilts are, according to the New York Times, “some of the most miraculous works of Modern Art America has produced”. The exhibition comes from the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective although some of the quilts are made by women who passed away before the Collective formed, in 2003. The older quilts tell stories of harder times in Gee's Bend, including the Great Depression, the Roosevelt era, and the Civil Rights movement. Many of the newer quilts seem to resonate with happiness and optimism through their bright colors and bold designs. www.tinwoodmedia.com Latin American Outsiders Exhibition -NAEMI, (National Art Exhibition by the Mentally Ill) This exhibition runs from July 29-September 7 and showcases works produced by unique group of Latin artists, usually self-taught, whose work arises from an intense, innate personal vision. www.naemi.org Teaching Artists September 8- October 23 This fascinating multimedia exhibition features the artwork of Art Center Sarasota’s varied and uniquely talented pool of instructors. An open house “Meet the Instructors” reception will be scheduled for September. Observer and Observed Sarasota Partnership for Children’s Mental Health in Collaboration with Art Center Sarasota Art Center Sarasota and Partnership for Children’s Mental Health teamed sixteen accomplished Florida artists with families living with the challenges of mental health issues to create a powerful exhibition of family portraits.
